Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

VM Uptime Costs Without Auto-Shutdown

high addon

Matillion charges for parallelism and uptime on a per-hour basis. Without tooling to automatically wake the VM when jobs run and shut it down when complete, costs can escalate quickly from unnecessary idle time.

It charges for parallelism and uptime, so you need tooling that can wake it up when it's time to run and shut it down when it's done unless you're good with just burning money.

2

Vendor Lock-In and Price Escalation Risk

medium migration

Once Matillion is deployed in production, switching costs are high. The pay-per-hour model means costs scale with usage, and organizations report limited leverage to negotiate after initial adoption.

reddit · 2025-02-18

Please be aware of the pricing of low code tools as once theyre in Production...you now have vendor lock in and are at mercy of their costs.

3

Major Upgrade Downtime and Reconfiguration

medium support

Matillion releases frequent major upgrades that require change freezes. Post-upgrade, certain configurations break and require manual fixing, consuming engineering time.

4

Support Response Time for Connector Issues

medium support

When Matillion connectors fail or have issues, support response can be slow, leaving data pipelines broken. One team migrated away partly due to slow support.

there were some issues on their connector but their support was so slow. And then the pricing is just too much for us. Migrating it to using airflow + custom EL script save around 75% of expenses
