Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

Forced Plan Upgrades with Steep Price Increases

high addon

Help Scout has a documented pattern of restructuring plans and migrating existing customers to higher-priced tiers without grandfathering old rates. One customer reported being forced from $1,500/year to over $7,500/year — a 5x increase — to retain AI drafts and unlimited seats. Multiple long-term users also report that loyalty discounts were removed and that features previously included are now cost-gated in newer plan structures.

They just announced they are 'upgrading' our plan from 1500 a year to over 7500 a year. So that we can use AI drafts and have 'unlimited seats'.. we have two dedicated support team members, and no reason to use AI drafts because customers hate not talking to an actual person.

Unfortunately, since my previous review below, they started the "enshitification" process. They changed prices several times, cost-gated key features, removed loyalty discounts, and are trying to squeeze as much as they can from members.

2

Data Export Requires Developer Access — Effective Vendor Lock-In

high migration

Help Scout offers no bulk UI-based export for conversations, notes, or customer records. Migrating away requires writing custom scripts against their rate-limited API. Users without coding skills have no practical way to retrieve their own data. Multiple reviewers flag this as a GDPR concern for EU customers, and call it a deliberate lock-in mechanism.

You need to know how to connect to an API to export your documents and ticket history (and on top of that it's rate limited). Don't know how to do that? You're out of luck.

trustpilot · 2022-04-30

Company has no decent way to export data, other than to write your own script and invoke their API's through the script for every conversation you ever had, and for every note you added to that conversation. And when you do, you have to worry about their API being rate limited. In order to use their API you have to be a coder.

3

Live Chat (Messenger) Restricted to Plus and Pro Plans

medium addon

Help Scout's Messenger live chat integration is unavailable on the Standard plan. Teams needing real-time customer chat must upgrade to Plus ($45/user/month) or Pro ($75/user/month). This is a $20/user/month minimum uplift from Standard. Reviewers note that most competing support platforms include live chat at all pricing tiers.

trustpilot · 2023-03-07

Help Scout recently announced a new integration with messenger, which is great news for their users. However, I find it disappointing that this integration is only available for their Pro and Plus plans. In a market where most ticketing and support services offer real-time chat with customers across all plans, it feels unfair to limit such a useful feature to the most expensive tiers.

4

AI Answers Add-On: Custom Pricing with No Published Rate

medium addon

Help Scout's AI Answers tier carries no public price. Based on user reports, AI feature access has been bundled into forced plan restructuring events at dramatically higher annual cost. Teams who do not want AI drafts may nonetheless be migrated to AI-inclusive tiers with no opt-out at the original price.

Good luck to them I guess... we'll have to move on.
