Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

First-Year Promotional Pricing Renewal Shock

high pricing

IDrive offers 30-50% discounts for the first year, but renewals revert to full price. For example, the 5TB Personal plan is $6.99/mo first year but jumps to $9.99/mo on renewal — a 43% increase.

2

Unauthorized and Incorrect Billing Charges

critical support

Multiple users report being charged for subscription plans they did not sign up for, having auto-renewal proceed after explicit cancellation requests, and facing prolonged refund disputes. IDrive has been reported to charge credit cards for yearly plans without authorization and to continue charging accounts after cancellation requests have been submitted.

trustpilot

I am absolutely disgusted by IDrive's billing practices. On March 26, 2026, I was charged my standard $11.84 for my monthly subscription. Less than 24 hours later, without any authorization or notice, IDrive charged my card an additional $118.41 (€103.35) for a 'Yearly' plan I never signed up for.

trustpilot

Promised me 50% of for renewal. Charged 100% via PayPal. Promised a refund, but then kept asking for a billing id, yet it wasn't in the PayPal portal. Stopped responding for days.

3

Storage Overage Charges

critical overage

IDrive continues to store deleted files in your backup even after you delete them from your device. Users who don't know to manually delete files from IDrive as well can quickly exceed their storage quota and face significant overage charges. One business user reported going from 250GB allocated to 603GB used because deleted local files remained in the backup.

About 6 months into the service iDrive started charging us $129.28 per month. We called and after being transferred 3 times the person told us we had used over 600 gb of backup. I looked in our iDrive account and sure enough we had used 603 gb. I expressed to the service person that we only had 91.3 gb of data to back up how could we have used over 600 gb. He explained that when we delete something on our drive the back up still holds it and that we would need to also delete on iDrive.

4

Unauthorized or Unexplained Billing Upgrades

critical overage

Multiple users report being charged amounts significantly higher than their expected renewal price, or being switched to yearly plans they did not sign up for, without prior notice or authorization.

trustpilot

My renewal was clearly shown as $99.50, yet IDrive attempted to charge $119.40 with no upfront explanation for the difference.

5

Auto-Renewal with Difficulty Cancelling

high addon

IDrive auto-renews subscriptions and users report extreme difficulty cancelling or getting refunds, with support being unresponsive or ignoring cancellation requests.

trustpilot

They make it impossible to unsubscribe. Support, do not reply for weeks. Scammers. Be aware of adding your real credit cards!!!!

trustpilot

Asked to cancel renewal 2/3 times, no response, took my money anyway.

6

Significant Price Increases at Renewal

high addon

Multiple users report that IDrive has more than doubled prices over a few years, and renewal pricing increases without adequate advance notice. Users who signed up at steep introductory rates face substantially higher renewal costs. IDrive has also been reported to attempt to charge renewal amounts that differ from what was previously displayed without explanation.

trustpilot

Prices have more than doubled within few years and the user experience was always bad. App and backup is slow. Poor features causing need to reupload the whole thing if paths change etc. Latest price hike slipped past and would never ever had accepted it.

trustpilot

My renewal was clearly shown as $99.50, yet IDrive attempted to charge $119.40 with no upfront explanation for the difference. I only discovered this when payment failed. When I raised it, I received no proper resolution—only a demand to pay within 15 days or risk losing access to nearly 3TB of my data.

7

Early Data Deletion on Cancellation

high support

IDrive may delete user data before or immediately upon subscription expiration, even if the user cancels close to the renewal date. This creates data loss risk.

trustpilot

I cancelled my renewal and they deleted my data. I only got to know two days before my subscription ended, but I find it appalling that they actually deleted my data before my subscription ended.

8

Unexpected Billing and Unauthorized Charges

critical addon

Multiple users report being charged amounts different from their quoted renewal price, being charged for plans they did not sign up for, and having accounts charged after cancellation requests. IDrive has been reported to charge cards without authorization for plan upgrades.

9

Price Increases Without Adequate Notice

high addon

Users report that IDrive prices have more than doubled over recent years, with price hikes sometimes going unnoticed by customers. Renewal prices differ from initial promotional pricing, catching users off guard.

trustpilot

Prices have more than doubled within few years and the user experience was always bad.

trustpilot

Discounted offers for the first year of the subscription are extremely cheap; however, you get what you pay for: software which is almost unusable.

10

Slow and Costly Refund Process

medium support

IDrive is reported to charge instantly but take weeks to issue refunds. Users report outstanding refunds going unresolved for months even when IDrive acknowledges owing the money.

trustpilot

Ironically they can charge you in an instant but when it comes to a refund, expect weeks.

trustpilot

I still have not received my refund that they acknowledge that they owe me but keep telling me it is still in dispute... it is March 3rd now.

11

Storage Overage from Deleted Files Not Purged from Backup

high overage

IDrive does not automatically remove locally-deleted files from backup storage. The interface makes it difficult to locate and delete files from the backup archive, causing users to unknowingly exceed their storage quota and incur overage charges.

trustpilot

The software occuldes where you can delete files in the backup so you end up going over and getting an obscene overage charge.

12

Immediate Account Termination on Payment Failure

high support

When a payment method fails or expires, IDrive immediately cancels the account and cuts off access to all backups with no grace period. Users receive a cancellation notice the same day the payment fails.

trustpilot

my credit card went out of date. The first thing I knew was a failed backup followed the same day by an email - 'we have cancelled your account'.

13

Auto-Renewal Cancellation Friction and Unauthorized Billing

critical support

Multiple users report being billed after explicitly requesting cancellation, with documented cases requiring 21 emails and 7 phone calls to resolve. Some users also report that attempting to disable auto-renewal triggers unexpected account changes such as password resets in keychain.

14

Storage Tier Gap Forces Overpayment

medium addon

IDrive's storage plan structure jumps directly from 500 GB to 5 TB with no intermediate option, forcing users who need more than 500 GB but less than 5 TB to pay for significantly more capacity than they require.

trustpilot

My only complaint is their weird pricing strategy that jumps from 500GB to 5TB. This means that for anyone who n...

15

Silent Feature Discontinuation Without User Notification

high migration

IDrive has discontinued support for certain backup methods without notifying existing users, causing backups to silently fail while appearing to continue. At least one Synology NAS backup method was deprecated with no communication to affected customers.

trustpilot

The company decided to silently sunset support for method I was using to back up from Synology NAS to their servers without sending any notification. This created a situation where the NAS would appea...

16

Overage Charges from Retained Deleted Files

critical overage

IDrive does not automatically remove files from backup when they are deleted from the local device. Deleted files continue to accumulate in backup storage and count toward the storage quota, causing users to unknowingly exceed plan limits and incur substantial overage charges. The software interface reportedly obscures how to manually delete files from backup, making it difficult to avoid this issue. Multiple users report paying more in overage charges than they paid for their annual plan.

trustpilot

They hit me with overage charges on my account. I have 2 TB hard drive and bought a year plan for 5 TB of backup. I some how got $200 of overage charges because I went over 5TB. I don't see how that's possible with a 2TB hard drive. After several unproductive emails with technical support they told me I had to make an adjustment to the number of copies their program had of my hard drive. They were saving multiple copies of my hard drive and then charging me overage charges. There was no discussion of this during the initial setup. It seems like they make their money on the overage charges and not the annual plan. I paid more in overage charges than I did for the plan. Beware.

17

Deleted Files Continue to Count Against Storage Quota

high overage

When you delete files on your local device, IDrive does not automatically remove them from your backup. These deleted files continue to occupy backup storage and count toward your quota, causing unexpected overages. Removing backed-up deleted files requires manual action inside the IDrive interface, which multiple users report is deliberately obscured. This behavior is buried in terms of service and not prominently disclosed during signup.

trustpilot

He explained that when we delete something on our drive the back up still holds it and that we would need to also delete on iDrive. That is way too labor intensive for us. We were under the impression that this was all automatic; when we added a new file it would be added to our backup and when we deleted a file it would be automatically deleted from our backup on iDrive. Personally, we view this as a scam as that is not the way it was presented when we signed up.
