Hidden Costs Breakdown

MVS Count

high implementation

The number of Managed Virtual Servers (MVS), Instana's core licensing unit, directly drives the base license cost.

Grounded summary

The number of MVS directly drives the base license cost

Deployment Model Choice

medium implementation

The choice between SaaS, self-hosted Standard, and self-hosted Custom deployment models impacts the cost profile, with self-hosted options potentially being more expensive than SaaS.

Deployment Model: The choice between SaaS, self-hosted Standard, and self-hosted Custom deployment models impacts the cost profile, with self-hosted options potentially being more expensive than SaaS

Log Ingestion

medium addon

Log ingestion is often priced separately from the MVS license and may require additional negotiation, potentially increasing the total cost.

Grounded summary

Logs in context are not free unlimited logs, and IBM may price them separately depending on packaging, retention, and contract terms, which can increase the total cost

Synthetic Monitoring

low addon

Synthetic monitoring is an add-on with costs starting at approximately $0.0003 per execution for managed Points of Presence (PoPs).

Grounded summary

Synthetic Monitoring Execution Volume: Synthetic monitoring is treated as an add-on, with costs starting at approximately $0.0003 per execution for managed Points of Presence (PoPs)

Data Ingest Overage Fees

high overage

Exceeding Instana's fair-use data ingest limits (325 GB of data ingest per MVS per month for Standard, 50 GB per MVS per month for Essentials) can result in "On-Demand Data Ingest" charges.

Grounded summary

Exceeding these limits can result in "On-Demand Data Ingest" charges

Professional Services Overruns

high implementation

IBM professional services engagements, particularly time-and-materials, carry a high risk of exceeding initial estimates, with a contingency of 15-25% often budgeted.

Grounded summary

Time-and-materials engagements carry the highest risk, and a contingency of 15-25% for services is often budgeted

Training and Enablement

medium training

Enterprise IBM platforms necessitate user and administrator training, which can add 5-15% to total first-year costs.

Grounded summary

Synthetic Monitoring Execution Volume: Synthetic monitoring is treated as an add-on, with costs starting at approximately $0.0003 per execution for managed Points of Presence (PoPs)

Infrastructure and Hosting

high implementation

For on-premises IBM software, buyers must purchase, maintain, and refresh infrastructure, while cloud deployments incur bundled or separate cloud infrastructure costs that can scale unpredictably.

Grounded summary

Deploying on other clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP) incurs both IBM software costs and separate cloud infrastructure costs

Implementation Costs

high implementation

A Forrester study reported implementation costs of $892,000 over three years for a composite organization, including internal time and effort for various setup tasks (source dated Jul 2026).

Grounded summary

License Costs: The same composite organization reported license costs of $1.2 million over three years, based on the number of hosts
