Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

Scaling with Steps (Past Model)

high overage

Earlier pricing models based on the number of steps within a workflow could lead to rapidly escalating costs, with one user noting costs could reach "tens of dollars for a single journey" for 100,000 users, though Inngest has since updated its pricing to charge by function run.

Grounded summary

A user on Reddit noted that for 100,000 users, costs could quickly reach "tens of dollars for a single journey," with multiple recurring journeys renewing monthly

2

High-Frequency Task Costs

medium overage

The per-run pricing model can become significant for very high-frequency background tasks, requiring careful cost modeling for high-volume use cases.

Grounded summary

High-Frequency Tasks: For very high-frequency background tasks, the per-run pricing model can still become significant, requiring careful cost modeling for high-volume use cases

3

Outage Impact

critical support

Outages on Inngest's end would affect all Inngest-dependent workflows, potentially leading to indirect costs due to downtime.

Grounded summary

Managed Infrastructure Dependency: As Inngest manages the infrastructure for background job execution, outages on their end would affect all Inngest-dependent workflows, potentially leading to indirect costs due to downtime

4

Integration and Cleanup Effort

medium implementation

Integrating Inngest with existing systems and handling cleanup for cancelled functions may require additional development effort.

Grounded summary

Integration and Cleanup: While Inngest simplifies many aspects, integrating it with existing systems and handling cleanup for cancelled functions (e.g., database cleanup, purging temporary resources) may require additional development effort

5

Granular Cost Reporting

low implementation

Achieving granular cost visibility, such as cost by client and AI feature, might require additional internal tracking or tools due to a suggested area for improvement in product reporting.

Grounded summary

Observability and Reporting: One user suggested an area for improvement could be stronger product reporting, such as cost by client and AI feature, implying that granular cost visibility might require additional internal tracking or tools
